Renewing your Drivers licence

Well it had come to that time again and I must say I was kind of dreading it. Time to renew my drivers licence. Visions of long queues and being sent back and forth with the wrong papers etc plagued my dreams.

My memories of the licensing department were not good, so I decided to get there before their doors opened.

I chose to go to Edenvale and was there at about 7:35. While there I quickly ran across the road to get the photos done (rip-off for desperate customers) and then waited armed with everything I needed. Photos, pen, ID.Cash.

At about 7:45 the security guard brought out piles of forms and started handing out each waiting persons specific forms that they needed to complete. What service! In South Africa? IN A GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENT??????/ I was shocked.

Anyway, at 8am exactly the doors opened and we all shuffled in with our completed forms.

As expected, first came the "Eye test". Please note you are no longer allowed to bring your own eye test results from your optometrist, the reason being they now cover 3 things at the same sitting. Eye test, Digital photos and finger print. Then all you have left to do is pay.

The queue moved with such efficiency I had to pinch myself to make sure I was not dreaming.

In and out with new licence applied for and temporary licence within 30 minutes?

Unbelievable? Believe it.

The licencing departments are getting so jacked that all you need to walk in with is your ID and pen. They even have card machines, so you no longer need to have cash with you. Well done guys! I'm impressed

I am now waiting for the little slip posted to me to let me know I can collect. We'll see how easy that step will be, stay tuned
